How CABR is Transforming Wool into Keratin as Part of the SPRINGWOOL Project (CABR Research Work Spotlight)
Dr Tielidy Lima, shown in the video below, is a postdoctoral scientist at the Bioengineering Organ-on-Chip Research Group (OOC) at the Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (CABR). She was recently performing keratin extraction from wool as part of her work on the SPRINGWOOL project.
In the video, you can see one of the keratin extraction procedures, starting with weighing and mixing the reagents and finishing with the final keratin product.
About the SPRINGWOOL Project
The SPRINGWOOL project addresses long-standing challenges in the wool sector, including low returns for farmers and environmental constraints. It explores sustainable wool processing methods such as the feasibility of mobile scouring units and investigates new applications for waste wool, including the extraction of bioactive compounds like keratin.
More about the SPRINGWOOL project you can read in our latest CABR newsletter here.
