Research Expertise
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research’s core platform as a Research Centre is very much aligned with our Technology Gateway activities. Bioresources are at the core of our research activities and we have a broad funding base from Science Foundation Ireland, the Irish Research Council, Horizon 2020, BioBased Industries and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Bioresources encompass a wide range of opportunities; the Centre for Applied Bioscience Research contributes to the wider bioeconomy through practical approaches to add value to bioresources, as well as contributing to policy through various national and European frameworks.
Bioresources describe a diversity of under-explored and under-exploited materials derived from waste streams, marine, plant, animal, mammalian, agricultural and microbial sources. The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research work with a wide range of bioresource sources and apply these to a platform of screening, characterisation, identification, mode of action capabilities. This information is used to identify potential applications of the bioresource and determine the potential commercialisation opportunities.
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research has developed and continues to expand an extensive biological repository of extracts and organisms derived from wide ranging sources and processes.
