Transforming Irish Sheep Wool into High-Value Bioactive Ingredients for Cosmetic and Biomedical Applications
Dr Arnold Marisa, Postdoctoral Scientist at CABR, is investigating how bioactive ingredients extracted from Irish sheep wool could be used for developing high-value products for biomedical and cosmetic applications, as part of the SPRINGWOOL project.
Dr Arnold Marisa is currently involved in biological testing of wool-sourced keratin and ceramides to produce bioactive formulations suited for various skin health applications including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, cell attachment and proliferation, and medical scaffolds. By transforming underutilised Irish wool into high-value bioactive ingredients and biomaterials, the research supports opportunities for sustainable innovation within the bioeconomy while creating new value streams for the Irish wool sector.
About the SPRINGWOOL Project
SPRINGWOOL is a Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM)-funded collaborative research project led by CABR and Munster Technological University (MTU), in partnership with Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), University College Dublin (UCD), and Atlantic Technological University (ATU). The project aims to remove bottlenecks and provide a springboard for innovation in the Irish-grown wool sector.
