Fermentation Suite

The Fermentation Suite is vital for bioprocessing studies related to process development and optimisation. This suite is used to conduct bioprocessing operations such as bacterial, fungal, algal, and enzymatic fermentations and hydrolysis, as well as biomass and culture growth, followed by downstream processing to recover the material or compound of interest. 

The suite consists of: 

• Bench-top glass bioreactor 

• Large-scale centrifuge 

• Pilot-scale micro/ultrafiltration system 

• Rotary evaporator

This suite is intended to target pilot-scale production of compounds of interest using microorganisms and enzymes. The unit operations involved in recovering the end products are:

1. Biomass growth, fermentation, and hydrolysis (using the bioreactor)
2. Clarification and filtration (using the centrifuge and micro/ultrafiltration units)
3. Concentration and purification (using the rotary evaporator, distillation, and crystallisation)
