How is the Centre for Applied Bioscience Research’s work helping to improve cardiovascular health?

Wisdom Shadrach is a Research Scientist at the Centre for Applied Bioscience Research who is currently working on the culturing of vascular cells to carry out in vitro pre-clinical safety and efficacy testing of drug therapies and interventions for conditions such as atherosclerosis.

Why is it important?

Atherosclerosis is the thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by a buildup of plaque in the inner lining of an artery.

It is a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases, and testing drugs on cultured vascular cells helps evaluate their potential to prevent or reduce plaque formation, which is crucial for developing effective treatments.

The method developed will help in screening drugs for their effectiveness in treating or preventing atherosclerosis at a pre-clinical level.
