What We Do
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (CABR) is a commercially focused, state of the art, Research Centre and Technology Gateway. It is a collaboration between Munster Technological University (MTU) and the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS).
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research’s vision is to be a leading centre for the development and application of science and technology to applied settings, in collaboration with external organisations and based on our own research.
The Centre brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers with commercial specialists to provide a centre of excellence in applied research, capable of exploiting opportunities in science and technology to benefit the regional and national economy.
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research has developed significant expertise in bioresources – detection, identification, characterisation, and valorisation – and collaborates with industry and other research centres to deliver this expertise in applied settings.
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research responds to the challenges of the biotech, food, and life science industries through the sustainable development of viable and cost-effective processes and products from bioresources. This development is driven through collaborative research and development, providing risk management and opportunity identification for our clients, partners, and researchers.
Our approach improves our clients’ competitiveness and competence, and facilitates the transfer of these innovative scientific solutions. Through strategic short-, medium-, and long-term partnerships, we provide creative, innovative solutions to industry’s challenges, as well as access to our research-based pipeline of commercially focused technology offerings.
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research’s state-of-the-art facilities and equipment are available to assist companies in addressing specific challenges. For more information on our facilities and equipment, please click here.
History
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research evolved from a merger in 2007 between the Natural Products Research Centre (NPRC), based at the Institute of Technology, Tralee (now Munster Technological University), and the Nutraceuticals Research Centre (NRC) at Limerick Institute of Technology (now Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest).
This merger was facilitated through the development of the Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) Centre Programme, established by Enterprise Ireland and supported by EU structural funds. The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research is currently core-funded by Enterprise Ireland as part of the Technology Gateway Network. The Centre brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers with commercial specialists to provide a centre of excellence in applied research, capable of exploiting opportunities in science and technology to benefit the regional and national economy. This team is located at both the facilities in Munster Technological University, on the Kerry Campus, and in Limerick IT, in the Hartnett Enterprise Acceleration Centre.
The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research was established by Dr Fergal Barry, Dr Henry Lyons, Dr Siobhán Moane, Dr Michael Hall, Ms Michelle McKeon Bennett, Mr Brendan McCarra, Dr Jerry Clifford, and Dr Danny Walsh.
