Developing Hydrogel-Based Lung Models to Study Diseases and Test New Medicines

Rosana de Assis Borges is a Postgraduate Research Student with the BOOC (Bioengineering Organ-on-Chip) Research Group) at CABR. Rosana is developing a hydrogel-based lung model (New Approach Methodology) that can be used to study lung diseases and evaluate potential therapeutic treatments.
Rosana’s research is supervised by Dr Emma J. Murphy and co-supervised by Dr Gustavo W. Fehrenbach, Dr Tielidy de Lima, and Dr Declan Devine.
Potential Impact of Rosana’s Research:
  • Multidisciplinary: combining tissue culture and material science to develop platforms to better model complex tissue such as the lung alveolus.
  • Disease Modelling: providing a model to study how lung diseases develop and progress under controlled laboratory conditions.
  • Reducing Reliance on Animal Testing: contributing to the development of human cell-based alternatives for preclinical research.
